EPP North held the second seminar under the project “Safe Sky for Birds in North-East Bulgaria”

The project is part of the LIFE program of the European Union (EU) and is implemented jointly with the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB)

Today in Veliko Tarnovo, the electricity distribution company serving Northeastern Bulgaria, ERP North, together with its partner Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB), held the second workshop on the joint project, which won EU funding “Safe skies for birds in North-East Bulgaria”.Its main objective is to prevent mortality among 16 globally endangered bird species caused by electric shock and collision with overhead power lines by applying best practices among modern solutions for their protection.

During the seminar, ERP North reported on the activities implemented so far under the project. Caring for the environment and protecting protected species is a priority in the company's work. So far, two field studies have been conducted with the participation of BSPB experts. As a result, various sections of the medium-voltage power distribution network are marked and the pillars are marked on which to place insulating elements and install diverters. As of the beginning of June 2025, there are 2343 secure poles in the network, 493 marking devices (diverters) have been installed. In the activities carried out, 275 employees of the company are engaged, and in the process of work 35 specialized equipment (auto blades) of ERP North are used.

A place in the program of the seminar was also given to the partners of ERP North from BSPB, who presented the different projects they are working on for the conservation of wild birds, important places and habitats for them. With a presentation, ERM Zapad, the electricity distribution company serving North-West Bulgaria, told about its experience in implementing projects for the preservation of the environment and biodiversity.

After the end of the presentation part of the seminar, the participants visited sites of the electricity distribution network near the village of Gorsko novo selo in Tarnovo, where the installation of safety elements on the poles in the area along the 20kV Cheshma power plant has already been completed.
